Certificate Programme Assessments and Examinations

At MVTTC we understand that assessment plays a major role in how trainees learn, how they are motivated to learn, and how teachers teach. We further understand that the most important part of the assessment is the interpretation and use of the information that is gleaned for its intended purpose.

Assessment at MVTTC is conducted formatively and summatively as per criteria and schedules set by relevant examination bodies. Additionally, students are assessed through teaching practice, projects, industrial attachment/practice and research work.

Mode of Assessment

Assessment is an integral part of the learning process and must support and complete the learning strategies in order to achieve the required outcomes.  Assessment in particular, must reflect the required progression and be sensitive to the range of key skills developed. The assessment will be conducted formatively (continuous assessment) and summative (semester examinations). There will be final validation Assessment which will be set by MVTTC Examination unit according to NACTE standards.

Distribution of the marks are:

  1. Continuous Assessment: 70%
  2. Semester Examinations: 30 %

Minimum pass is 50% for continuous assessment and 50% for semester examination

Failure to attain required pass mark for either continuous assessment or/and semester modular examination, candidate shall undertake technical supplementary.

Assessment Methods

1. Continuous Assessment

Continuous assessment will be carried out in all modules as the teacher trainees’ progresses through the programme. The teacher trainees are required to carry out assignments, tests, quizzes and presentations as described below:

Classroom Tests

The intention of classroom tests is to measure the theoretical ability of students and evaluate performance in written work. There will be a minimum of two written classroom tests during the semester, which will be supervised by the college tutor(s) for duration of not less than two (2) hours.


The objective of assignments is to reinforce the learning process by involving the participation of the students in finding the solution to a given question or problem which require decision-making. They include tasks given to trainees apart from written tests and examination or projects, so as to enhance self- development. Assignments may be administered in a form of written work or practical exercises that are done individually or in a group. For each module appropriate assessment methods and instruments will be indicated.  Tutors will decide on a convenient number of assignments for a given module in a semester.

 2. End of Semester Assessment

Semester examinations are conducted at the end of each semester. These are modular examination. A formal timed, usually of at least three (3) hours, but not less than two (2) hours is required to administer one examination session.  The semester examination component shall carry a weight of thirty (30%) percent. It will be done under a supervised condition by the institute’s official supervisors.

Management of Assessment

The mode of conduct and management of assessment shall be those approved by NACTE. The management of assessment is effectively organized and implemented according to the Institute’s Examination Regulations.  These regulations can be accessed by students on the technical institute’s website.  Students shall be given an orientation on assessment during the respective assessment activities and shall also be given at the beginning of the programme of study, a copy of these assessment regulations.

Practical Skills Orientation and Teaching Practice

The module will run as a practical training in which teacher trainee engaged in practical activities related to their occupations. Normally these activities are held in various vocational and technical institutions. This Practical Skills Orientation and Teaching Practice module will be done in two (2) phases of four (4) weeks each phase, resulting the total of eight (8) weeks.

1. Practical Skills Orientation

In this phase, the trainee will be engaged in practical activities related to their respective field of specialization including production of different items and will be supervised by respective vocational or technical teachers of the host institution. Particularly, during practical skills orientation the trainee will have to do the following activities:

  1. Familiarize with real working environment
  2. Be engaged in all Institution’s activities being social, academic, administrative, spiritual and the like
  3. Assist in preparation on materials for practical lessons
  4. Engage fully in all practical activities
  5. Note down all activities for final report

 Moreover, the trainee will be required to keep records of activities conducted every day at the field station using portfolio and produce a report.

2. Teaching Practice

In this second phase, the trainee will participate in the actual teaching practice for other 4 weeks. Practical Skills Orientation and Teaching Practice module is an integral part of training and its assessment shall form part of final grade and certification.

Particularly, during teaching practice, the trainee will have to do the following activities:

  1. Familiarize with real working environment
  2. Be engaged in all Institution’s activities being social, academic, administrative, spiritual and the like
  3. Prepare training plans, related materials and budget
  4. Deliver theory and practical lessons
  5. Carry out assessment
  6. Design mode of improvement
  7. Maintain trainees discipline

Supervision of trainees’ activities will be jointly done by MVTTC and the institution where the trainees is attached. Assessment of TP progress shall be conducted in collaboration with internal assessors from MVTTC and external assessors selected from other learning institutions.

Grading System and Classification of Awards

Computation of Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA)

For all assessment leading to NTA Level 5 results will be computed as follows:-

Where: P represent a grade points assigned to letter grade scored by the students on a module

           N represents the number of credits associated with the module.

The Grade Point Average (GPA) shall be computed and truncated into one decimal point.

An award shall be given to a student who satisfies the following conditions:

  1. She/he must have successfully completed all modules for which the award is to be made; and
  2. She/he has achieved the minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) equivalent to pass
